Congratulations, you’re having a baby! This is a time of excitement and happiness but you may also be feeling apprehensive and unsure about what’s to come. Giving birth is a life changing experience and it’s important for you feel safe, supported, heard and educated. Having the right birth team by your side can positively impact the outcome of your labour and you may decide that a doula will make a great addition.

If you ask most people what a doula is, the majority of them will mention pregnancy and childbirth, but not so many really know exactly what a doula is. The word has Greek roots and roughly translates to ‘in service of’ and that is a really good basic description. Doulas are there to support, empower and encourage women antenatally, during birth and postnatally if needed. This can range from providing information and signposting to other services; supporting women during appointments; being someone to talk to; offering physical support such as massage, reflexology or providing traditional herbal remedies and practices. Most importantly, the service a doula provides should look and feel exactly how the client wants it to. They should do what they can to make sure that mum has the most empowered and informed experience she can. Feeling protected, supported and cared for all the way through.

“Let choice whisper in your ear and love murmur in your heart. Be ready. Here comes life.”
