Who is the Sunshine Doula?

Hello and thank you for visiting my page!

I’m Natalie also known as the Sunshine Doula. I am a Muslim revert of Jamaican and Irish heritage, born and raised in South London where I now reside with my husband and our five children.

At various points on my own journey through motherhood I have faced discrimination and mistreatment due to my age, race and religion.
These experiences made me passionate about supporting other women and helping them to feel empowered and in control of their own experience.

I am committed to educating, informing and holding space for women. Helping them to trust in their instincts, their bodies and their decisions. Making sure that they are equipped with the information they need to make those decisions with confidence and wisdom. Evidence suggests, women with continuous labour care are less likely to end up with medication, medical intervention or caesarean section. This also leads to a higher chance of successful breastfeeding. I strongly believe that pregnant women deserve to be heard and I am dedicated to helping them find their voice.

In 2017 I trained with a national charity as a perinatal befriender. This gave me the opportunity to be matched with families in the perinatal period (during pregnancy and up to a year following birth) who were suffering with low to moderate mental health issues or those who were vulnerable to developing them. I provided emotional support through weekly meetings and via text/phone and also practical support in terms of attending groups with them and providing them with information and access to relevant services.

Alongside my doula practice, I am a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter with the Breastfeeding Network, and a qualified hypnobirthing practitioner. I am a proud volunteer for two amazing organisations; Neighbourhood Doulas and the Happy Baby Community, who provide doula care to some of the most at risk and vulnerable women across London.

I completed my birth doula training with Nicola Goodall of Red Tent Doulas, who have a philosophy which is rooted in tradition, love, wisdom and healing which wonderfully mirrors my own ethos. I also completed postnatal doula training with the renowned Mars Lord at Abuela Doulas. My aim is to help women step into the immense power and strength that comes along with pregnancy, birth and motherhood and to walk alongside them, always reminding them exactly how wonderful they are.

Whatever you would like your pregnancy and birth experience to look like, I will try my upmost to help you achieve it. I can support home and hospital births, vaginal birth, caesareans and VBACs. Whether this is baby number one or ten, I will be by your side to make sure that you are the the driver in your birth experience and not made to feel like a passenger.
